Why Better Technology Does Not Automatically Create Differentiation
Your technology may be better.
Yet the customer may still see it as more of the same.
That is increasingly common as companies add some level of AI, analytics, automation, connectivity, and smarter services to their products.
The problem is that competitive broad, abstract messaging is confusing...sounding the same...
Smarter. Faster. Connected. AI-enabled. More efficient.
At some level, those capabilities may be real, but capability alone does not tell the customer why your difference matters to them.
Commercial differentiation happens when the technology is connected to something more specific:
-
A problem the customer needs to solve
-
An outcome they care about
-
An economic or operational impact they can recognize
-
Evidence that your approach can deliver it
A technically different product is not automatically a commercially differentiated one.
A useful test is surprisingly simple:
Can your customer explain why your solution is meaningfully different without repeating your product features?
Because differentiation is not simply what is different about your technology.
It is why that difference matters to the customer.
