Sept 22 2026 - Seller Activity vs Buyer Commitment

The Difference Between Seller Activity and Buyer Commitment

A deal can look busy, perhaps very active…without actually moving forward.

Meetings are happening. Demos are scheduled. Proposals are sent. Follow-ups are completed.

But those are mostly seller activities.

The better question is: What is the buyer doing?

Buyer commitment shows up differently:

·       A stakeholder agrees to involve another decision-maker.

·       The customer shares data needed to build the business case.

·       An executive sponsor engages.

·       The buyer confirms a decision process or timeline.

·       Both sides agree to a specific next step.

Those actions signal that the customer is investing time, access, information, or internal credibility in moving the opportunity forward. Those are clues for commitment.

That distinction matters.

Because a pipeline full of seller activity can create the appearance of momentum while actual buyer commitment remains weak.

In opportunity reviews,

Don't just ask:  “What did we do?”

Ask:   “What did the customer commit to doing next?”

That is often a much better indicator of whether an opportunity is really progressing toward revenue.
